Newsome Marching Band

The new school year often means Friday night football games. But for members of the Newsome High School Marching Band and Color Guard, music and marching often fill the entire weekend.

The marching band, under the direction of Michael Miller is well known throughout the state for its outstanding half time shows which fans can watch just about every Friday night during football season. During the fall, the marching band also entertains fans at pep rallies and competes against other high school marching bands at competitions held all over the region. Over the years the student musicians at Newsome have earned dozens of accolades including a Bands of America Grand Regional Championship in 2016.

Last Thanksgiving, the band earned the ultimate honor with an invitation to march in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade. The event culminated nearly a year of fundraising to ensure as many members as possible could make the trip to New York City, where they were featured prominently on the nationally televised parade.

During the rest of the school year, marching band musicians participate in symphonic band or Newsome’s audition-only wind ensemble where they perform in seasonal concerts and compete in music festivals. There are even competitions for the school’s percussion ensemble and indoor JV and Varsity color guards. The latter earned a gold medal at the 2017 Florida Federation of Color Guards championships and was a finalist at the Winter Guard International (WGI) Southeastern regionals.

As a testament to the hard work of Newsome’s musical groups, the Florida Bandmasters Association awarded the school the Otto Kraushaar Award in 2017 for straight superior ratings from all judges at marching band, jazz, district and state concert band music performance assessments.

Like any sport, it takes hard work and dedication to be a marching band and color guard member. The hours of practice Newsome’s young musicians invest has given them much to be proud of.
