SAN DIEGO - September 12, 2007 - On October 20, 2007, Newland Communities, the nation's largest community developer, will host its second annual Life is good(R)

Pumpkin Festivals in 11 communities in seven states across the country. The Pumpkin Festivals are free to attend, giving thousands of families a fun-filled day featuring activities for all age groups, including pumpkin carving, games, live music, great food and more, all the while raising funds for charity. The first Pumpkin Festivals held in Newland Communities took place in October 2006 and raised $400,000 for charities.

The national beneficiary of the 2007 Life is good Pumpkin Festivals is HomeAid, a leading national non-profit provider of housing for today's temporarily homeless. In addition, each of the communities holding festivals have selected a local charity to benefit from the event.

"Our relationship with Newland Communities and Life is good is such a natural fit given our mutual desire to build stronger communities where we work and live," said Genette Eaton, chief executive officer of HomeAid. "The pumpkin festivals and the funds that they raise will have a tremendous impact on serving the temporarily homeless population in each of the participating Newland communities, helping families and individuals in need get back on their feet."

Eleven Newland communities will host 2007 Life is good Pumpkin Festivals, including 4S Ranch (San Diego, Calif.), Whitney Ranch (Rocklin Calif.), Estrella (Goodyear, Ariz.), Cinco Ranch (Katy, Texas), Summerwood (Houston, Texas), Falcon Pointe (Pflugerville, Texas), Sterling on the Lake(Atlanta, Ga.), Clarksburg Town Center (Clarksburg, Md.), Ladysmith Village (Ladysmith, Va.), FishHawk Ranch (Tampa, Fla.) and MiraBay (Apollo Beach, Fla.).

"As a developer of residential communities from coast to coast, we are proud to have the majority of the funds raised at our 2007 Life is good Pumpkin Festivals benefit HomeAid. We whole heartedly support HomeAid's efforts to help build dignified housing where temporarily homeless families and individuals can find shelter and rebuild their lives," said Newland Communities' CEO, LaDonna Monsees. "As well, our Pumpkin Festivals would not be possible without our alliance with Life is good. We are very proud to be affiliated with Life is good for this charitable, worthwhile event."

The alliance between Life is good, an apparel company that spreads good vibes through its colorful collection of clothing and accessories, and Newland Communities, one of the nation's leading developers of residential communities, gives both companies an expanded way to reach out and give back to communities across the country. At each of the Pumpkin Festivals, funds are raised through the sale of specially designed Life is good Pumpkin Festival tee shirts, merchandise and donations.

"Good communities rally around great events and great causes," said Bert Jacobs, Life is good co-founder and chief executive optimist. "Through our alliance with Newland Communities, both companies have an incredible opportunity to make a real difference. On October 20th, we will share a message of optimism with an expanded audience and raise major funds for children and families who need a helping hand."

To find out more about the Life is good Pumpkin Festivals visit www.newlandpumpkinfestival.com.

About Newland Communities(R)
Newland Communities is a privately owned company that creates resident

A woman hugged a friend with one arm while holding a pizza box with the other.

Tots frolicked in the water fountain. Other kids swirled ice cream while looking at giant images that flashed on the wall from a projector television. Four girls donned red and white cheerleader uniforms from mythical Albuquerque East High.

And a teenager wearing a Pink Floyd shirt played his guitar.

All in all, I would guess 300 to 400 people came out to last weekend's High School Musical 2 outdoor viewing party - and I couldn't believe it.

"It was better than I expected," said Mindy Anderson of the YMCA, which sponsored the event in cooperation with Disney. "More and more people just kept coming. For us, it was just a really successful event."

Sure, Disney's sequel to the megapopular High School Musical had a guaranteed family audience, but could you expect such a turnout on a Saturday night

Why come to the square when you could go to the Ford Amphitheatre and see High School Musical star Corbin Bleu and other teen sensations in concert Why set up on the lawn when you could watch the sequel in the comfort of your home Why watch a movie that debuted the night before when you could see the Bucs play live

Stacey Rainey provided an answer. She brought her Sunset Bay Chapel youth group of about a dozen middle school and high school kids to the gathering for a simple reason.

"They don't all live in FishHawk," Rainey explained. "But this was a chance for them to get together and hang out."

Essentially, the desire to connect with others drove the crowd, which might surprise suburban life observers.

To hear some people tell it, we retreat to gated communities and cul-de-sacs because we long to be isolated.

Park Square offers evidence to the contrary.

Whether it's a viewing party for kids or a Friday night concert series featuring cover bands, Park Square activities seldom fail to draw a crowd. Charlie Hotel, a self-described pop-rock trio, plays the square tonight starting at 7.

Disco Inferno wraps up the summer series Thursday, and it wouldn't surprise me at all if the square fills with folks wearing polyester shirts, bell-bottom pants and platform shoes.

"We come over for everything," said a couple who live across the street. "We were watching the Bucs game, but we had to see what was happening. We think it's great. I hope they keep doing it."

Newland Communities, the FishHawk Ranch developer, sponsors most of the activities. Still, it's not uncommon for Park Square to draw folks from outside FishHawk. They long for fresh-air opportunities to be among neighbors and make new friends, even on humid nights.

Imagine my joy when teenager Robert Rivers met me and exclaimed, "I love the St. Petersburg Times." Sure, maybe he's just a kid who wanted to get his name in the paper, but hearing his compliment brought a smile to my face.

My 5-year-old daughter, who knows the lyrics to every High School Musical song, came away with Disney tattoos, cups and a desire to move to FishHawk.

Yet I came away realizing that the larger South Shore and Brandon community doesn't need to hunt down "for sale" signs in FishHawk. It needs to strive for touchpoints all over and try to replicate the spirit of the Park Square gatherings. The people at Winthrop Town Centre are already on board with a series of Friday night outdoor movie events that runs through Sept. 28.

Whether we live in Apollo Beach or Seffner, school, church and other activities offer those chances if we open up to the possibilities.

I recently went out with some parents after a Brandon Cowboy

Sabal Homes wins the Aurora Award

The Aurora showcased:

The living is just better at FishHawk Ranch. A recent article by the well-respected Tampa Bay Parenting Magazine proves what Southern Hillsborough County's known for years - that this Newland Community's rich array of family activities creates the ideal place to raise children.

In September, the local magazine designated FishHawk Ranch as the "Best Community to Raise a Family." In its 10 year-history, FishHawk Ranch has "grown to be a true hometown with an exciting year round calendar," the magazine states.

At FishHawk Ranch - where there is a long tradition of welcoming families - no one stays a stranger. Tampa Bay Parenting Magazine observes that new families slip right into the FishHawk Ranch rhythm through their robust, mature neighborhoods and carefully planned town center. Park Square, which is an enclave of cafes and everyday services, creates a truly pedestrian-friendly community, the publisher says.

Throughout the year, FishHawk Ranch offers stimulating activities that draw families from throughout Hillsborough County. Just recently on September 15th, the "Art in the Park" festival featuring the area's best artisans attracted more than 800 children and adults.

During fall's festive time - October - FishHawk Ranch celebrated its second Life is good® Pumpkin Festival. The all-day event offered entertainment, games, and more than 2,400 pumpkins ready for carving, but most importantly, gives back to those in need. All proceeds from this free event went to support HomeAid and the Pediatric Cancer Foundation.

In all, FishHawk Ranch hosts an array of entertainment and community affairs each year, giving kids and parents a safe, fun place to be everyday. Mixing the spirit of well-lived life with the ideals of creating a better world for all is one of the goals of FishHawk Ranch and why it is considered the best place to raise a family in Tampa Bay.

FishHawk Ranch is located at FishHawk Boulevard off Lithia-Pinecrest Road, seven miles east of exit 250 (Gibsonton-Riverview) on Interstate 75. The information center and 18 model homes are open Monday - Saturday 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Sunday noon - 6 p.m. For more information, please call (813) 685-7500 or visit www.fishhawkranch.com.

FishHawk 11th Annual Road Race

On your mark, get set, go … and with those words the 11th annual FishHawk Ranch Road Race was off and running. About 750 men, women and kids from all over the Tampa bay area attended the 2008 race raising a total of $ 12,800 for local schools.

“There is a lot of pride and community spirit behind the race,” says Steve Dunn, race director and founder of the FishHawk Road Runners Club (a running club based in FishHawk Ranch). “The race is our community’s event. It starts and finishes right here in the heart of our community, Park Square. Many of the runners who participate call FishHawk Ranch home.”

Now a signature event for FishHawk Ranch, the race started off with humble beginnings. In 1997, the goal behind the race was to bring people out to the see the growing residential community and at the same time to raise funds for local charities. Dawn Turner, event organizer recalls, "Back then, FishHawk Ranch was a quarter of the size that it is today, but runners still enjoyed the natural environment that FishHawk Ranch had to offer. Also, the number of runners in the first few races totaled about 200 - 300. However, we knew that the event would gather momentum and it is amazing to see what it has become today."

Preparation for the Road Race starts months in advance; finding sponsors, determining the course and planning the breakfast and after party. Three different races happen during the day; a Fun Run for kids, a 5K race and a 10K race.

The event is a true community event organized in partnership between the community developer Newland Communities who take the lead on sponsorship and logistics, and the FishHawk Ranch Road Runners Club who manage the race portion. The Road Runners Club oversees such things as course mapping, water stops, and overseeing chip timing (a small lightweight chip that uniquely identifies each racer as they cross strategically placed electronic mats). Road Runner Club members also run in the race, sprinting on roads, paved paths and mulched trails around the community. In 2008, of the Club’s 165 members, 49 ran in the race and received many top awards.

Steve Dunn started the FishHawk Road Runners Club not long after he moved to the community from Virginia in 2003. A life-long runner, Steve remembers, “I first tried to start up a running club at FishHawk in 2004. Unfortunately, we had four hurricanes that year, which put a damper on club attendance, so I gave up for awhile. Then in 2005, I tried again and the Club really took off.” Club members now meet three times a week to run on the communities’ 25-miles of trails, train on hills and even practice on the track at the local high school.

FishHawk Ranch resident resident LeeAnn Koontz trains regularly and in 2008 participated in the race for the third year in a row. She said, “The Road Race is a great event to get the family together. This year my 8-year-old son Zachary was the youngest participant in the 10K race finishing with a time of 58:31 minutes beating me and many other adults!” LeeAnn added, “Zachary says he likes to run because it helps him keep in good physical shape for all the other sports he participates in. Our family motto is: a family that runs together stays together, and so we really look forward to the Road Race every year.”

The 60 acre project began on paper in 2000 as a part of the FishHawk Ranch community development plan. To put those plans into action, it took years of work by residents who rallied to; obtain donations, form a non-profit corporation and enlist volunteers. Friday, prior to the opening of the four baseball fields, about forty people, coaches, board members and volunteers, worked through the rain preparing for opening day. Project superintendent Ian Andes of J. Kokolakis was impressed, “Everyone’s been great to work with. It’s reassuring as the builder to see the people who are taking it over working alongside us. On opening day, we had a lot of people stop us to thank us for a great job. It really showed how important it was to the community. Seeing the kids out here playing and enjoying the park, makes it all worthwhile.
It all came together as 1,400 people attended the 7:00 a.m. inaugural ceremony of the FYSA baseball fields. For Scott Powers, president of the FishHawk Youth Sports Association (FYSA), standing on the fields announcing the opening was an overwhelmingly emotional moment, “It was unbelievable. It was a great day for everyone in FishHawk. When construction is complete, this will be the best park in the county.” Stated Eagle Ridge resident Kelly Daniel who attended the opening, “It was pure Americana. It was everything good about kids athletics from the Newsome High School baseball players who came to all the kids running around. It was very impressive. A wonderful community event.” As the ceremony wound down, the baseball players who had hopes of playing this season on the fields took to the outfield and made what was a dream for many FishHawk Ranch residents a reality. Matt Ceren, Baseball League president, threw the first pitch to his son, Alex, christening the new fields.
The Fishhawk Sports Complex, which is scheduled to be completed in May, will eventually host baseball, softball, football and soccer leagues. Many residents became involved initially because of their children; however, as Powers stated, “In the end, it became something more than that. I care about all the kids in the community. It’s going to be a focal point for our community and our kids for a long, long time.” For more information about FYSA, visit FishHawksports.org.

Eco-Fest

Park Square was literally crawling with critters in March as EcoFest 2008 kicked off it’s first annual event.
